Tennessee Tax-Free Weekend

5 Things To Know

The 12th annual sales tax holiday for Tennessee is literally right around the corner. The state does this prior to students returning to school and this year’s will be July 28th-30th. Save some cash on back-to-school items before your kids return to school. Shoppers can purchase qualifying items, without paying local or state sales tax from 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 28th, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 30th. “The sales tax holiday for back-to-school items is another way to put more money back in the pockets of Tennesseans. We encourage Tennesseans to take advantage of this tax break as they prepare their children for the upcoming school year.” Governor Bill Haslam said in a statement.

Here’s what you need to know.

Only Select Purchases are Tax-Free

For the most part this holiday applies to clothing and school items that are less than $100 and computers that are less than $1,500. Other items that are tax-exempt are binders, books, backpacks, crayons, paper and rulers. You can find a complete list of items on The Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.

The Holiday is for Everyone

You do not have to be a student or parent to save.

You can Shop Online

Not only are in-store, over the telephone, by email or by email tax exempt, so are internet sales.

Pay Attention

Many items are still taxable during this tax-free holiday. Jewelry, wallets, purses, phones and computer accessories will still be taxed. If you buy a monitor or keyboard by themselves, you will have to pay tax. However, if it is sold in conjunction with a computer…tax-free! Tablet computers, like an iPad, are also exempt.
