Pigeon Forge Summer Vacation
June has finally arrived folks! School is out for the summer, kids are rejoicing and parents are trying to plan the summer activities and vacations out. Sound familiar to you? We all look forward to the summer months. Cookouts, time spent at your favorite swimming hole, going to the park and planning your trip to your favorite vacation destination…summer can quickly become incredibly busy. Summer, indeed, may become busy, but that does not mean it can’t be relaxing, fun and full of new adventures.
Enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country. Think about that everyone. Most people are within a day’s drive of enjoying the many activities the Smokies have to offer. Throughout the year, thousands of people drive the distance to spend some time in the Smoky Mountains. There is something to do and enjoy no matter what time of the year you visit, but the summer is one of the best times to vacation with us. Miles and miles of hiking trails that lead to old homesteads, waterfalls and more await. To cool off in the good ole Tennessee summer humidity, grab a tube and float down the river or for those of you that are a bit more adventurous, jump on a raft (with a guide) and battle the rapids as you make your way down the river. Young kids can even take part in these activities, but if you are looking for something a bit more subdued, simply enjoy one of the many spots throughout the Smoky Mountains that offer a nice swimming hole or wading area. If you are travelling with really young children, we suggest you try Metcalf Bottoms. Located 11 miles west of Gatlinburg, Metcalf Bottoms is a great place for kids to wade and splash in the water without you worrying too much about any rapids or the water being too deep. Metcalf Bottoms is also a great place for a picnic. They offer grills, a bathroom facility and picnic tables. There is also several trails nearby that are easy enough for most people to enjoy. The Metcalf Bottoms Trails is an easy and pleasant hike that leads you to the Little Greenbrier School. This school was originally built in 1882. At around 0.1 mile, you will see an old home-site that is marked by an old rock wall. Then at 0.5 mile, you will cross three footbridges right before you reach the school. You are allowed to enter the Schoolhouse. There are still some old desks and a blackboard in the school, which was used until the 1930s. Across from the schoolhouse, you will find an old cemetery. This is where many of the area’s early settlers are buried to rest. If you are still feeling like exploring some more, you can access the Little Brier Gap Trail nearby which will take you to the famed Walker Sisters Cabin. There are also several great hikes within a short driving distance that are great this time of year to view Wildflowers.
Head over to Dollywood and Splash Country
Dolly Parton is famous around the world, but here in here hometown area, she is truly known as “one of us” and a hometown angel. She continues to help her “people” as she calls us. Each year, she adds some new and exciting ride to her theme parks here in Pigeon Forge. People travel from all over just to come visit her famed theme park Dollywood. At Dollywood, you can enjoy numerous festivals throughout the year, nightly firework shows in the summer, blacksmiths, roller coasters and some delicious treats. It is a great way to spend the day, that is for sure! Adults and children alike love visiting Dolly’s Dollywood and this year she has added Drop Line and the Whistle Punk Chaser which is a junior roller coaster. Now in the warmer months, Splash Country is open and it is rated as one of the best waterparks in the nation! The new addition this year is the Tailspin Racer!
